If you're thinking about when to go to the Maldives, you'll have two main things to consider - activities & weather. Visitors enjoy a variety of beach-based activities such as swimming, fishing, snorkeling, diving and surfing, all made possible by year-round tropical temperatures ranging between 80 and 90 degrees. But with tropical weather comes the inevitable rainy season - and we do recommend that you plan your travels around it. That being said, even at the height of the wet season, it would be unlikely to experience more than 3 consecutive days of solid rain. Rain can occur at any time of year, and often times with very little warning, so don't let the different seasons dissuade you all too much - the Maldives is paradise even when its raining!

Basics

The Maldives offer two main seasons. The islands normally experience dry weather from January to April. Vacationers looking to maximize on sun often opt for this season. The rest of the year generally brings increased precipitation as well as bigger waves, more hotel vacancies and less expensive lodging. During these months, travelers can take advantage of resort spa services and a selection of water sports. Although traveling outside the dry season means that storms and rain are more likely, warm weather nevertheless persists and marine life is more varied.

Beach

If you're looking to relax, dig your toes into hot sands and wade in bathtub-like turquoise waters, you'll be happy to know that beach season is year-round. The dry season does of course limit your chance of rain so if you want to play it extra safe, be sure to schedule your vacation during this season. The islands see consistent sunny 80 degree weather 365 days a year more or less, but you can expect lower humidity and less wind from December to April. Beyond beach-based activities, the dry season is perfect for hiking, sightseeing and all around exploring.

Scuba

The great thing about the rainy season is that it is favorable for diving, and you will likely encounter more underwater creatures during this time. Maldives' coral reefs are phenomenal year-round but the rainy season is notably exceptional. 30-foot manta rays, sharks, sea turtles and vibrant coral are just a few examples of the amazing wildlife you'll come across during your dive in the Maldives.

Surf

When surfers think about when to go to the Maldives, most favor the wet season's impressively large waves. Nevertheless, beginners may benefit from surfing or windsurfing on more tranquil seas. So schedule your Maldives surfing holiday during the drier months if you want to play it safe.

Fish

Anglers have an understandably deep appreciation for the islands; and some will even fish at night. Although you can enjoy this activity at any time of the year, fishing enthusiasts typically favor November through March. December and April certainly won't disappoint either.

Events

One more component to factor in when deciding when to go to the Maldives is special events. If you don't mind a few crowds, you might consider celebrating New Year's under the shade of a coconut tree. If live music, great food and exciting parades are your thing, time your visit to coincide with Independence Day on July 26.

Although the Maldives consist of over 1,100 islands, its climate remains largely uniform. You can more or less expect hot tropical weather throughout the year in any locale, but humidity and rainfall are subject to change depending on the season. So, as noted at the beginning, if you need to decide when to go to the Maldives, weather and favorite activities will rank among your most important considerations.
